Basic RiderCourse (BRC)

The Basic RiderCourse (BRC) is designed for a new rider or riders who want to refresh their basic skills.*
  • The course is 16-20 hours long -- attendance is mandatory at all classroom and range activities.
  • The course is offered at various training sites across KY. Visit our "Sites" tab for details. Tuition fees vary but will not exceed $150.00.
  • The course consists of both classroom and riding activities.
  • KMP provides a training motorcycle and DOT approved helmet for use in throughout the course.
  • Students are required to provide other basic riding gear: eye protection, long sleeved shirt, full fingered gloves, long pants and over the ankle footwear.
  • Successful completion requires passing a written test and an on-cycle skill evaluation.
  • Successful completion earns you two completion cards: 1) KMP card that will waive KY's performance skill test to get a motorcycle license; 2) MSF card that may entitle you to an insurance discount on cycle insurance.
  • RiderCoaches have the discretion to excuse any rider who is not demonstrating adequate riding ability to safely remain in the course. Successful completion of the course is NOT guaranteed.

Classroom activities are geared toward getting you to begin thinking like a motorcyclist.
  • Start with basics: How can I manage my risks while riding? What is appropriate riding gear? How do I prepare myself and my bike for the ride?
  • Then move towards physical aspects of riding: What are the controls on a motorcycle? How do you operate these controls?
  • And then address the mental aspects of riding: How far ahead should I look while riding? What am I looking for and why? How do I avoid hazards?

*** Note: the Basic RiderCourse Rider Handbook can be viewed in the Library Section of www.msf-usa.org ***

Range activities begin as though you've never been on a motorcycle either as a passenger or rider.
  • First you'll discover where the controls are and how they operate.
  • Then you begin to move - first in a straight line then into gentle leans.
  • The riding exercises build upon one another and before you know it, you have basic control of the motorcycle: you can start out, turn, shift and stop.
  • These basics are further built upon as you practice street riding techniques: tight turns, cornering skills, hard braking and swerving maneuvers.
  • The riding exercises conclude with an on-cycle skill evaluation.

  • Kentucky residents under the age of 18 at the beginning of the class must have parental/guardian permission to attend.
  • If a KY student is 16 or 17 years of age at the beginning of the class, he/she is eligible for a tuition waiver. (Some sites require a deposit and will reimburse the fee after completion of the course.)
  • All participants must be at least 16 years of age.

*** Note: Currently KMP is not using the e-Course. Please check back for updates. ***
